Message for Doc

  1. Jan: Thanks for your email. Yepper on those fried bologna sandwiches. Good thing we changed our eating habits over the years. I’ll be in Atlanta in October for the Ga Radio Hall of Fame weekend. Maybe we can catch up while I’m there. Hope you enjoy the book

  2. Jan

I can’t wait to read your book. WQXI to WKLS. I was there when you left WQXI. In fact, you gave me the lobby photograph! Fried bologna sandwiches and someone to talk to in the wee hours of the a.m. I still have the photograph. 40+ years have passed, and it seems like yesterday. The 70’s were the greatest!

  3. I have no idea why the book would cause him agitation. No one book is for everyone. Doc and the Judge requires more than a casual read. Hopefully he will give it a second read and email me with any questions about content he doesn’t understand. Suggest that to Dave.

  4. I have a very close friend in Modesto, Dave, who thinks your book sucks. Honestly I don’t think he’s even read it. He and I discussed the book after reading about it in the paper, hearing you on the radio, and hearing comments from others about the book. His face turns red and he seems to get very agitated when I ask him about the book….like he’s jealous. What’s your take?

  5. Thanks. I’ve heard from some that they get what they consider to be the “real meaning” of the book on the second read. Enjoy.

  6. I LOVED the book! It’s in my travel bag for a second read!

  7. Hello, ALC. Great to see your message on the site. You were great to Mari and me when we moved to California; your kindness and support brought laughter and hope to Mari during her darkest days. She loved being with you. Glad to hear that you’re nearby…hope to catch up in person soon. Enjoy the book!

  8. ALC-California

    Hi Doc,

I read the article about your book in the newspaper. I thought you had moved back to Florida after Mari died so I was quite surprised to find out you are still in Sonora.

I hope you are doing well. I have remarried and after living off and on in Costa Rica for four years, we are living on Lake Tulloch.

I’m looking forward to reading your book.

  9. Thanks, DS Las Vegas! Hoping to make some “house calls” in your city soon. The 70’s were special; I’ll bet you’re speaking from experience. Your movie comment is interesting; the stories have played in my head like a movie for decades. It’s so refreshing to have flushed them out and put them on paper. Glad you enjoyed the read.

  10. ds Las Vegas

Doc and The Judge took me on a incredible journey back to the 70’s depicting the crazy world of radio during that decade. The relationship between Doc and the Judge was a realistic portrayal of the dynamic chemistry that can transform two people into a singleness of thought and creativity. Doc’s poignant reflections of his past and its relationship to his development as an adult, indicates his insightfulness to life’s experiences as it influences our character and integrity. This book is a must read, not only for its humor, but for its philosophical look at our collective behavior both in the 70’s and today. This book is a movie waiting to happen!

  11. CJ, thanks for your message. One of the great pleasures the book has brought me is the reconnection with many people from the “SHE’S ONLY ROCK n ROLL BITCH” days. The station continues to live in the hearts and minds of many; I meet them in the most unexpected places in my travels. CJ, it was in large part your contributions that made SHE one of the great radio stations of all time.

  12. Well shiver me timbers…Just how & where do I begin this long lost re-connect? First, My sincere condolences for your loss of your wife I never had the pleasure to meet. I was steered in your direction just last week. But I always knew our paths would cross again. Big-Time Congrats on the book. Somebody had to do it. Can’t wait to read & recall what YOU wrote and remember about the radio station that nobody will ever forget.

Appreciate you sending me an advance copy of the book. My husband said he played golf with the Judge once at Inverrary. Thanks for showing the picture of the Judge hitting out of the sand trap. That’s the way my husband remembers him. We live in Jacksonville now but have great memories of S Florida and “She’s only rock n roll!”

Me again! My husband said to tell you that he enjoyed the story about the Judge trading Howard Cossell a joint for a cigar. Rabbit tobacco it was…uh huh.

Send me a signed copy of the book to read before we do the on-air thing.

I remember the Neil Young show you talk about in the book. I was about 17 then…when was it..1976 I think. And I remember when the lights went out and 200,000 people were holding up cigarette lighters. I was there! My son is a disc jockey and he shared the copy of the book you sent to him. Never knew what was going on behind the scenes of my favorite radio station – SHE’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll. Those were the days!

Thanks for letting me be a part of the book review group. It was very interesting. Never thought about doing this sort of thing for a new book. I’m the one who said that the Judge reminded me of an old fucked up boyfriend I had years ago. I’ve changed my mind since reading the copy of the book you sent me. Judge was young and restless. My boyfriend was young and fucked up. The story about you and Judge in the bed of the pickup truck with the young singer is my favorite. I’ve recently moved to San Diego but still have great memories of the part of California you’re in. Good luck with the book.

My husband remembers you from your days at WQXI in Atlanta. He says that he met you once at a Ronnie Milsap show at Misty Waters. A radio friend of his told him about the book. We’re looking forward to getting it in January. Let us know if you have plans to come to Atlanta.

I do mornings on a talker in the Midwest. I would like to have you on the show. Enjoyed the samples.

Thanks for the signed copy of the book. Ya know, you could’ve been a real doctor. You took care of the Judge and kept things in order. You and the Judge were great friends. I can tell that his spirit is still alive with you. Lucky you weren’t busted during the Elton and Alice escapade. I appreciate getting to know you when you were working in California.
Good luck. Tammy – Modesto, Ca

Thanks for the email about the book. I also attended the review group in Sonora. It was very interesting to see parts of the book before it was released. I’m the one who laughed out loud when you showed the wedding story. I’ve told friends about the group experience and the book. Looking forward to reading it. Thank you.

Another review group person here. I had no idea what to expect when I showed up for the meeting. When you put the slide up showing Doc and the Judge I thought I was in for a story about an old doctor and judge. Boy was I wrong. You two were crazy. Thanks for letting me be a part of the book from the beginning. Joe – Sonora, Ca

I applied for a job at SHE when I was in college. You treated me well although I didn’t get the job. I understand now that I wasn’t ready at the time. I’ve read the sample chapters and look forward to getting the book. Good luck!

Why didn’t the Judge want to live past 30? I’ve read a few chapters and hoping more is revealed about his death wish. Enjoying what I’ve read.

Thanks for the Doc and the Judge pre-release and thanks for signing it. You and the Judge did some crazy shit! Glad you survived the 70’s. So did I…I think!

Read the sample chapters. Enticing. Looking forward to reading the book. I remember the glory days of WSHE (SHE-FM). I was in college then. Remember when you guys gave away a Doors album in exchange for a ‘door’? Where did the police car door come from? Would love to have you on the show to talk about the book.

Thanks for sharing an advance copy of your book. I took the afternoon off and read the entire thing. It was a needed diversion from watching the stock market tick down again. Great read!

I participated in one of your review groups about the book in Sonora, Ca. Thanks for letting me know that it will soon be available. I’m looking forward to reading the entire thing after seeing parts of it with the group last summer.

A great read, Doc and the Judge is hilarious and an incisive post modern philosophical study. An enduring tale begins of two dudes who approach business and life like the high wire walkers in the circus but without a safety net. Its poignant themes reflect FM radio in the 70’s; they bear witness to the decadence of lives given to sex, drugs, rock ‘n’ roll and excess of any description. Ultimately this is a special meditation on friendship and the meaning sought and brought to life when we identify and walk boldly on life’s road with a true friend.

As I boarded my flight to Florida I wondered what kind of programming Gary Granger had invented to create such excellent ratings at WSHE. Gary and I had lunch when I arrived, and I asked….why is this station…this programming so special??? He told me that it was a formula of feel…or something like that. I listened for a day or two and understood. This book is written with the same sort of feel. I’ve only read a few chapters but I am captured….can’t wait to read it all!!!!

  37. Paul:
Thanks for your message. I remember the meetings with you, Ted, and Mark. WQSR was a great station. Hope you enjoy the book and hope to catch up with you in Melbourne in March. Check back here for the date of a book signing I’ll be doing there, most likely on March 21st. Too much time has passed since we’ve talked…let’s stay in touch this time.

  38. Paul

Gary, I knew you when WSHE and WQSR in Sarasota/St.Pete were working
pretty close, Mark Beltaire and I visited your station several times
with Ted Rogers to meet with the Milners… those were great days and
as a young Sales Manager, new to AOR, I always appreciated your kindness
    and hospitality.
Really look forward to reading the book…

  39. Thanks for bringing back the Pink Floyd memory. The SHE listeners were beneficaries of many great ideas developed in conjuction with record promoters. The ‘Write Your Own Ticket’ promotion touched the creative nerve of many and resulted in some priceless works of art from the audience. Thanks for making it happen! Yes, little did we know at the time that we were in fact living in radio’s “glory days.”

  40. Doc -

Great stuff from what I already read here…those days were the REAL “glory days” of radio.

I remember the ‘Write Your Own Ticket To The Dark Side Of The Moon’ contest we did on WSHE in conjunction with the Pink Floyd album, the overwhelming response the station received, and the incredible things listeners created from their imagination. It was a true testament to WSHE’s power as a station and the quality of its audience.

Be well old friend! Can’t wait to read the rest!

  41. Trixie, thanks for your message. Now I know where to turn for “bad” advice. The doctor’s bag is used for house calls, and I’m making a house call at Turkey Creek Country Club in Alachua on March 20th. Join us..it’s a quick flight from Iowa. Hope you enjoy the book.
    Doc

  42. Trixie – Iowa

This book looks very interesting, Doc. I, too am a writer. I write a weekly column for 365Ink. I write a bad advice column under the name Trixie Kitsch. My father is also a writer although he writes mostly things about Sherlock Holmes. What are you using the doctor’s bag for? Maybe I don’t want to know. T-Iowa

  43. Thanks, M.H. Thanks for your message and kind words. Look forward to hearing from you again once you’ve read the book. Best wishes.

  44. M.H. California

Hi Doc, Congrats!!! I’ve heard a lot about your book. Can’t wait to read it… I’m so glad you are doing great. Best wishes and take care Doc ;)

  45. You are probably the sole owner of a Quixie “tenna topper.” You may be the only person who even knows what a tenna topper is. Hope you enjoy the book.

  46. Gary, can’t wait to read the book. Is a Quixie “tenna topper” worth anything these days?

  47. Thanks, Karen. I was Doc long before you knew me as Gary. The book will be out soon and I hope you enjoy the read. Hello to your two girls. They’re both beautiful and very talented.

  48. Karen Anderson

Wow, it’s wierd calling you Doc…lol! You have been very busy since we last saw each other…GREAT JOB! I look forward to reading the book and having you sign it for me. The girls are excited as well, more like facinated by the whole thing. Karen

  49. Thanks, Ben. Come back often and share your experiences from the 70’s and 80’s

  50. Ben Hulet

    Nice site Doc!

  51. Larry, “The good you discover in others is more like you will want to be,” my mother always said. I’ve always grown from knowledge and experiences shared by true friends.

During our moment on earth, we are blessed to cross the path of people who unquestionably leave a memorable impression. You are such a person Gary! This terrific recounting of the 70’s is truly like being transended to that time and place, as if we are traveling within your soul.Anyone who reads it will experience a renewal of life and a better understanding of just how precious the journey should be. A must read for anyone calling themselves “American”.
I raise my glass to you my friend…never a better one have I had!

  53. SCG:

Your comments are very kind. Maybe our paths did cross in the 70’s and they will cross again…when we meet for me to sign the book.

  54. SGC

Doc, I can’t wait to get this book. The pages that you sent me totally are unbelievable. Never have I read anything so
beautifully written but raw as well. That was our time, “the 70’s.” I am sure that our paths crossed back in the day. Lookin forward to the
next book. I want you to sign my book.

    Love ya
