Gary Granger: Author’s Bio

Born and raised in Thomaston, Ga, Gary (Doc) Granger’s lifelong profession as a broadcaster began at age 15 as a disc jockey at WQXI, Atlanta. His life has afforded him a dizzying array of experiences and opportunities with memorable highs including sharing the stage with the Beatles in Atlanta, decades of peerless service to the broadcasting industry, a ‘jarhead’ with the USMCR during the Viet Nam era and the thrill of a deep abiding, lifelong friendship with the Judge who was the quintessential American original. Gary writes about a decade of many memorable experiences shared with his friend the Judge during the Rock ‘n’ Roll 70’s. He and the Judge had a pact that if one of them survived the 70’s he would write about those experiences.  Doc survived to fulfill the promise made to his friend, and in doing so discovers himself all over again.

Gary seeks to understand the soft and vulnerable underbelly of humanity. He seeks to understand himself and has maintained a lifelong interest and fascination in us all: the sibling, stranger, colleague, nurse, teacher, firefighter, policemen and women, foot soldier, the prodigious child and the social pariah equally. The kings among us and the pawns are of equal interest to this modern anthropologist clinically dissecting what it means to be human.

Those who know Gary Granger have heard him urgently ask “when is the war won?” This is the secret code to understanding this complex man. He champions the individual who acts with honor, valor and integrity. He stands against corruption, discrimination and advocates for those who have no voice. He enjoyed a warm friendship with Martin Luther King though many years MLK’s junior. He is the Swiss watch maker extraordinaire who pulls his next masterpiece apart for the simple pleasure of seeing its precision internals at work, admiring the beauty and perfection of the instrument he carefully studies, assesses any failings or flaws then returns it to its owner.

His lifelong passion has been an abiding curiosity regarding the question what it is to be human. Music has always been his muse: country, rock, and soul. A close friendship with Charlie Daniels speaks of his first love of country music forged in Georgia in his grandmother’s home as they absorbed country music singing along out loud to every song the radio played. He’s the study of a modern man who’s ecumenical ‘music church’ makes room for all great music. He acknowledges the people who conceived it, wrote it, played it and recorded it. Between these pages you’ll find the inside scoop on unbelievable and unforgettable stories of the day of two dudes who were there when FM radio was coming into prominence.
